Ludwig 1962 Brass Shell 14 x 5” Super Sensitive Snare Drum
I’ve been collecting drums for over 30 years, and decided that I have more than I need.
So, I’m letting some amazing kits, snares, and other drum gear go so it can be enjoyed by others.
Much of this gear is very rare, and you may not see items like these for sale again.
Edited Quotes from Ludwig catalogues,,,,,,,,
Once again Wm. F. Ludwig brings you a snare drum that is a miracle of tonal vividness and response, an instrument of ultimate perfection… the Super Sensitive featuring the exclusive dual throw-off snare release.
Dual throw-off provides parallel snare control with two complete mechanisms operated by a single control lever.
Snares are released from both sides at once, moving away from the head under constant and even tension.
Each snare strand may be individually adjusted for perfect snare alignment and tension balance.
Solid one-piece heavy gauge brass shell is precision formed with centre bead and flanged edges for triple strength.
This is the new Acoustic-Perfect all-metal shell developed by Ludwig.
An entirely new principle in shell design assures instant response and undistorted snare action at all volume levels.
The result is a drum sound with exciting new clarity and brilliance.
Stick rebound is faster, easier, playing is more effortless.
From the entire drum head, response is instant, true, undistorted, and choke-free at full power.
Each tone is sharply defined and fully projected, from whisper to full volume.
Here, indeed, is a milestone in the development of a finer drum sound.
The beaded, perfectly round seamless all metal shell is triple chrome plated.
This is definitely one of the rarer 60s Ludwig brass shell snares I see.
I have discovered vintage Ludwig brass shell snares create some of the most exciting, musical and memorable sounds out of all the brass vintage snares I’ve played.
There is something added to the pop and ring of the brass shell.
This snare is in great working order and has some minor issues.
There are 2 individual snare wires missing from the original 10, and the 8 existing wires give the drum a full and amazing snare sound (If you want these 2 snare wires, I’m sure they can be bought or made and easily fitted)
There is some corrosion on the lugs but not on the brass shell, and there is a minor scratch / dent on the shell which should not spoil your pleasure in playing this BEAST!
As you can see in my pics, much of the chrome on the shell has lost its shine, faded a lot and may have had steel wool used on it. Thats how it came to me so Im not sure how it happened. It doesnt affect its sound at all. You can rechrome it or play it as is and youll have a killer sounding Mofo. If the shell had no issues, it would be worth around $1500. So Ive adjusted its price accordingly.
It’s got the original round black 1962 damper fitted.
By the way, if you’ve ever played a 70s aluminium shell version of this and been disappointed with its sound, join the club. I’ve owned a 6 ½ and a 5” and I would rate their sound at a 7/10, and I’ve owned 2 of these brass 60s versions, and I would rate their sound at a 10/10
